About us
The Chlor Alkali plant in Richardsbay IDZ. The initiative was also driven by a gap in the market for import replacement and industrialisation transformation. The development phase started in 2014 as a direct result of the DTI trade missions to India and Italy led by the Honorable ex Deputy Minister, Ms Elizabeth Thabethe. EAC has 5 African directors working alongside Thyssen Krupp RSA to commission the 1 billion rand Chlor alkali plant that will create about 185 sustainable jobs and 300 during the two year period of construction.

- Elegant Afro Chemicals (“EAC”) is establishing a chlor-alkali plant (the “Project”) within the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (“RBIDZ”) and has formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (“SPV”) named Africhlor for the purposes of implementing the project.
- Africhlor will produce 46 845tpa of Caustic Soda Lye, Chlorine, Sodium Hypochlorite, Hydrogen gas and Hydrochloric Acid; and import a further 12,000tpa of caustic soda, to be used in an array of industries such as pulp and paper, chemicals, soap and detergents, and the water treatment industry.
- The market continues to experience extreme shortages and high prices for both caustic soda and chlorine products with existing producers unable to meet demand in South Africa
- EAC has built a reputation in the chemical manufacturing and distribution value chains, and has been awarded numerous business awards.
- The Project is expected to create 122 permanent jobs, 68 indirect jobs and 300 during the 2-year construction phase
- To date, EAC has achieved several key project milestones in bringing the project to bankable feasibility stage, including:
- procuring committed offtakes from mainly private sector buyers for more than 80% of the planned production of the plant supporting the revenue forecasts for the Project;
- securing rebates and incentives of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) under the Special Economic Zones (“SEZ”) Programme, which includes the dtic’s financial support towards the funding of the “Top structure” required as part of the capital expenditure for the Project;
